The Unity Project
A silent piece of activism―comprised of human beings ― a living, breathing illustration of our country’s motto: e pluribus unum — out of many, one.
Our country’s motto is e pluribus unum – out of many, one. Yet somehow we’ve forgotten or perhaps we’ve never reached the aspirational nature of those words before and now is the time to finally fulfill them.
The human installation art piece brought to life on October 18, 2020 in East Hampton, New York was a cry for solidarity at a critical time in our nation’s history. The video designed by Studio La Maria was released on Election Day 2020 in an effort to continue to set an intention for unity, equality and peace.
Love Never Dies
A living example of the notion that “love never dies — it only changes form” — public hugs on Carnaby Street, London to help people with grief during the holiday season.
Love never dies — it only changes form. I’ve given public hugs. In Santa Monica with my son. In Santiago, Spain to pilgrims finishing the Camino. But while spending the holiday season in London in 2019, a phrase came to me one morning — “Someone You Lost Wants to Hug You Through Me.”
The holidays can be a hard time, especially if you’re grieving. Jamie Anderson said, “Grief is just love with nowhere to go.” The day I planned to take my sign and go over to Carnaby Street arrived. When I woke up I found out Ram Dass had died which only made my plan seem more perfect. I had learned so much about love through his life and teachings.
As I reflect back on this day in December, 2019, and especially after the era of “social distancing”, I’m moved by the intimacy I experienced by hugging and holding numerous strangers. The suspicion. The hesitation. The unbelievable vulnerability. One assault. Many smiles. And some tears.
An act of presence, pure presence, is some sort of activism and art which I aspire to.

Looking for a way to connect deeply with strangers, I considered taking a job as a tollbooth worker or a cashier at a Starbucks, but instead came up with Rx Haiku which combines my love of vintage typewriters, poetry, people and the medical world.
Rx Haiku has been done at parties, festivals and corporate events.

No Side Effects commented on the use of prescription medication in America.
As a psychotherapist with 30 years experience I understand that psychotropic medication is invaluable for certain people, however, many of the desired effects could be achieved through cognitive and behavioral changes, all of which have no side effects besides a greater sense of well-being. Yet too often we risk the side effects in search of a quick fix.
